Traversing through Mexico on a cargo tricycle, Edgardo Zúñiga makes it his mission to save stray dogs and raise awareness about animal cruelty. He is dedicated to rescuing abandoned dogs that roam the streets, giving them a second chance at life.
On July 17, 2013, he embarked on a journey to explore the country and find stray dogs without owners who wander the streets and highways. He has traveled halfway across the country, and his adventure has led him to Chiapas, a Mexican state located on the southeastern border with Guatemala. During this trip, he has been accompanied by a group of 14 dogs that have become his travel buddies.
Edgardo, a man from the western state of Nayarit, wears clothes gifted to him by people as he tirelessly works towards his mission. His goal is to improve the living conditions of animals who often fall prey to human mistreatment and neglect. This journey is both a sacrifice and a way to spread awareness to society, according to the 48-year-old.
According to Efe, the man shared that he has been joined by dogs from different parts of Mexico, particularly those that are often left unadopted and stranded. He affectionately referred to them as his “dog rescue squad,” as they help him educate others about trust and nobility towards humans. Ever since he started his mission, he has already rescued more than 400 dogs from various states including Nayarit, Sinaloa, Sonora, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Campeche, Tabasco, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo.
The man known as the “dog guy” rides a tricycle outfitted with provisions such as food, drinks, shoes and clothes. This eye-catching ride enables him to brave various weather conditions, from rain to sun. Currently, he is journeying through the Soconusco region of Chiapas, specifically in the towns of Huixtla and Tapachula. Along the way, he plans to take in more dogs that are in need of care and a better quality of life.
Afterwards, you’ll venture to Puerto Madero, a charming town on the Chiapas coast. You can rest there for a few days while your furry companions catch up on some much-needed sleep. Edgardo’s mission is all about raising awareness of the incredible abilities and contributions of these loyal animals. He simply hopes that people will recognize their value to humanity.
During his trip, he aims to rescue dogs while also serving as a mediator to secure the release of other rescued dogs. According to the activist, these animals are affectionate and protective creatures that deserve our care and attention. The journey to the southern region of the country, where he has received a warm welcome, was not without its challenges, as per the Samaritan’s account.
As it makes its way across the Chiapas coast, this initiative will traverse through several regions throughout the southern states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. The purpose of this project, as stated by its founder, is to aid canines in every corner of Mexico. It’s noteworthy that animal cruelty is prohibited under the law in a minimum of 15 Mexican states, such as Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacán, and the State of Mexico. Edgardo, who spearheads this campaign, believes that educating people about animal welfare and cultivating a culture of compassion towards animals is essential for preventing instances of animal maltreatment.
